Stress Overload! Rescue Remedy


This time last year, I was an absolute emotional HOT MESS!

I had just began my career as a nurse and it is safe to say I was scared out of my mind, no exaggeration. I cried before work, I cried on the way there, I cried on my way home and then cried myself to sleep. Rinse and Repeat.

There was nothing in particular that freaked me out the most. I built relationships with the patients and staff easily. Most people didn't believe me when I said it was my first nursing job. I could handle the tasks of the job but for some reason, even the mere thought of having to go to work sent me into a nervous, emotional, tizzy. It was more than clear, I was experiencing panic attacks.

I even went as far making an appointment for the doc, simply because I was tired of the "crazy feeling" as I described it. After a few minutes in his office and me using my nursing/psychology background to help him understand my symptom, he prescribed me Zoloft- never filled that prescription.

Here are a few tips that helped me get through my Stress Overload:

1. My Support System - It may sound cliche but your support system is everything. The people in your life who are there for you are most important in times like this. For me, it was my family, boyfriend, and close friends. Their words of encouragement was much louder than those thoughts of self doubt and defeat. Positive people to remind you how strong you are and to be your strength means alot during this time. Or even just to have a shoulder to cry on.

2. Talking - You have to talk about how you feel! I know, when you're feeling stressed sometimes the hardest thing to do is talk about what you feel but when you do, its a relief. Sometimes just hearing your own thoughts out loud helps you to rationalize them. I talked even when I didn't want to or even when I felt like what I was saying didn't make logical sense. The good thing about it is emotions aren't always logical, its just how we humans work.

3. Writing - Sometimes you just need to have a conversation with yourself. No input from others, just a way to put all your thoughts down, right in front of you. What a release. Suddenly your mind doesn't seem as cluttered. I've always written in a journal (diary) from a very young age. Its a judgement free zone. The paper, your pen of choice, your thoughts. Now days with all the technology we have, I found myself "writing" on my cell phone when I wasn't near paper.

4. Rescue Remedy Spray - My mom is an avid Dr. Oz watcher. Anyone who watches him knows he's an advocate for homeopathic medicine and natural remedies. 5. Time - That old saying...Patience is a virtue. Its the one thing most of us fail to give ourselves, time. Especially when starting something new. We have to give ourselves a chance to adjust to change. Being that I deal with people's lives everyday, of course there's going to be some anxiety. We're usually anxious about things we care about and want to do good at. Now over a year later, my support system is still important, I'm still talking and writing (blogging) and I still carry my Rescue Remedy spray with me, just in case.   1. Excellent post and advice! I incorporate most of the methods you mentioned. Writing helps me a great deal, as does talking and without my support system, I'd have probably lost my mind years ago. :) Great post!

  4. I think the stresses of being a nurse are never fully appreciated. I never had your level of panic attacks, but started every day with a prayer that I would cause no harm and provide good care, and ended every day with the hope that I had done enough good and worry that I hadn't! I worked ICU/CCU for many years until I became a Stay-at-Home mom. I will tell you, nursing does gets easier with more experience. I hope that your stress relievers have helped you cope, and that you continue nursing. My guess is that you are very good at it!
